Setup

For optimal performance your fire pit/rock ring should not exceed 36" and 10" in height.

Step 1:

Drive the lower part of the fire stake into the center of the fire pit.

Step 2:

Adjust the threaded upper section of the fire stake so that when it is inserted into the lower section, it will be approximately 2 inches higher that the edges of your fire pit/ring. Remove the threaded upper section of the fire stake after it has been adjusted. It will be re-inserted right before you cover the fire.

Step 3:

Build your fire as you normally would. The lower section of the fire stake can be used as an aid to help tent the logs.

Step 4:

When you are ready to cover your fire pit/ring, the flames from the fire should be no higher than 6 inches and the wood should be in a charred state. Fresh wood will cause excess smoke after covering.

At this time, carefully insert the threaded upper section of the fire stake.

Step 5:

Stake down the Campfire Defender using the provided tent stakes. If you are unable to use tent stakes, you can use heavy rocks on the corners to prevent the cover from moving off the fire pit/ring.

Step 6:

Adjust the vent to allow optimal airflow. You will have to determine what that is based on weather, altitude, etc. Completely closing the vent will extinguish the fire. Opening the vent all the way will cause the fire to burn more rapidly.

Step 7:

When you are ready to restart your fire, carefully remove two corners of the Campfire Defender. Fold the cover over the fire pit/ring towards the two corners that are still staked down and allow to cool. Carefully remove the threaded upper section of the fire stake. Agitate the coals and add more fuel (paper/pine needles/kindling) to the fire pit. Fan the coals to ignite the fuel and rebuild the fire as you normally would.
